School Punishment Strap

School punishment straps are not used in the United States anymore. They were used here until corporal punishment was no longer allowed for unruly students. Canada, however, does still use the school punishment strap. It is made out of a thick rubber rather than leather that stings when it hits. The Canadian school strap was generally administered to the hand, at least in public schools. In more recent times at least, it was typically made from rubber belting (or rubber on a canvas base) rather than leather.

There were no straps in Massachusetts when I was I school. It was illegal as it should be. No teacher should have the right to adminster corporal punishment to a child. If any teacher ever used a strap on my child they would be in court so fast.

That sounds very like a tawse to me, rather than a straight punishment strap which is what Dean Clarke illustrates and describes. Assuming your experience of said implement was at school in the UK I presume it wasn't in Scotland or you'd probably have called it the belt or the tag or even the tawse rather than the strap.

Public School punishment or abuse. I am not saying it didn't or doesn't exist but when we Catholic school kids reached High School, we could not believe the difference. Most of the "bad kids" the nuns so labeled turned out to do a lot better academically in general.
