NOTES: Those interested in curve-stitch designs may enjoy Jon Millington’s attractive book, Curve Stitching: The Art of Sewing Beautiful Mathematical Patterns (Diss, England: Tarquin Publications, 1989). This full-color paperback includes a brief quotation from Mary Boole, who invented curve stitching in 1904;

Of course, we could get another set of patterns by branching out from a square. Any regular polygon—triangle, pentagon, hexagon, etc.—could be the basis for similar designs. I did not build that generalization into my program, however, so, for the moment, I’ll leave those designs to others.

Curve stitching utilizes basic geometric forms, making curves and circles out of straight lines. Order and symmetry are the basis of its appeal. Young children of ages 4 to 5 are able to be successful stitching angles.

Chain of Changes ... Arrange the shapes in a line so that you change either colour or shape in the next piece along. Can you find several ways to start with a blue triangle and end with a red circle ... Is it possible to use all 28 dominoes arranging them in squares of four? What patterns can you see in the solution(s)?

A lesson designed to develop students' awareness that straight line segments can produce the illusion of a curve, and their ability to recognize and describe number patterns; and to help them experience the beauty of mathematics by introducing geometric fundamentals.

Introduction to Curve Stitching - Line Designs; A greater number of notches on the side of the square will result in a design which is higher in density but has the same curve. The numbering of the notches can be varied to create different number patterns or can be used to discuss the Cartesian Coordinate System.
