Reviving Dead Grass

Summer heat and drought can leave dead (brown) patches of grass on your lawn. There are a few tips on reviving dead grass. First try watering your grass. If it is not completely dead a good soaking with water can revive it. If that doesn't work, reseeding in the fall may work. Use a hoe to scuff the affected area, if the area is large, use a rake or core aerator. Sprinkle seeds over the affected area, followed by a good fertilizer that works well with newly planted seed. Then lightly water the area two to three times a day. Once the seeds start to germinate, water less frequently but more deeply. If the area is larger, or the rainy season is nearing, you may want to consider laying new sod, as rain will wash away the seeds. To lay sod, remove old grass and its roots from the affected area by using a sod cutter. Use a hoe to scuff up the area, then spread a good starter fertilizer. Lay on your sod and water frequently. It is important to water up to an inch or for about 30 minutes a day, as this helps the sod to settle faster. The easy fix for damaged grass is overseeding, but Landschoot warns that overseeding takes a bit of work. "You can't just throw seed on dead grass," he says. "It must be in contact with loose soil and it must have sunlight and space to grow."
