Difference between Inquire and Enquire

Is there a difference between the words inquire and enquire? The answer to that is no. The word inquire means to seek by asking more or less. That could mean seek and answer, result or dirrection. The word enquire is just a variant of the word inquire in spelling. Enquire has the same meaning as inquire. So why have the two words with the same meaning and similar spellings? We may never know the answer to that but now, at least, we can feel free to use either one and know that they mean the same.
