Difference between a Leader a Manager

An excellent business question to ask is "What is the difference between a leader a manager?" To some, the functions might be the same, but they are not. The functions are different and might be filled by the same person or different people. To understand, it's helpful to think of a leader as someone who inspires. A group may have a formal manager whose role is to supervisor the group, but it may also have an informal leader. That individual is the one whose ideas are readily followed. In the best situation one individual is able to fulfill both roles.

The difference lies in the leader realising that the achievement of the task comes about through the goodwill and support of others (influence), while the manager may not. This goodwill and support originates in the leader seeing people as people, not as another resource for deployment in support of "the task".
