Granite Hardness

Believe it or not granite has many different harness to it. Now the talc is the softest of the minerals can be easily scratched with your fingernail and it is used in paints, and talcum power. Calcite is a little harder on the scale of hardness, you can barely scratch it with a copper penny and is used in limestone. Moving on up the scale of harness apatite you can barely scratch it with a knife blade and this is used in common fertilizers. Moving on up to the scale to quartz it is a common mineral and often one of most pretty ones, it can easily mark steel and hard glass and used as gemstones. Depending on the feldspars and quartz portions, the total Mohs Hardness of granite is from 5.5 to 7. The darker the granite, the lesser is the quartz, and thus the lower is the hardness. Commercial granites are not affected by common organic acids such as a lemon acid and vinegar, contrary to marbles.

Let's take a granite pegmatite for example. This might contain grains of topaz (H= 8), quartz (H=7), feldspars (H=6) and muscovite mica (H= 2.5). You could thus get a range of hardness depending on which grain you tested.
