Lee Canter's Assertive Discipline Model
Lee Canter and his wife Marlene created assertive discipline in 1976. They developed this system because they saw that teachers were unable to rid their classroom of unwanted behavior by the students. The plan consists of three parts which are: rules, positive recognition, and consequences. The program explains the elements included in each point. The rules include setting expectations at all times, having a limited number, and each student being visible to you. Positive reinforcement is somewhat self explanitory however the point includes encouraging proper behavior, improving self-esteem, and praise. The consequences of improper behavior should be addressed calmly and quickly, have a set of consequences listed, and ensure that the students will not enjoy the chore.
