Short answer, it isn’t important. Long answer, to the extent that economics is an accurate predictor of curative measures for an ailing economy or predictive of ways to improve the economy, it is important. The problem is, for every economic prediction, there seems to be an equal and opposite prediction.

I took some time out to interview my mother as to whether or not she thinks the study of economics is important, and why or why not. In her opinion, it gives you a better understanding of how the world's economy works so that you can know where your money goes and how the government decides to spend money.
