The Appalachian Plateaus are only structurally a plateau. The ancient surface has been eroded by stream action over millions of years into what is today a region of high of relief. Small, narrow valleys (or hollows) twist through the resulting mountains.

Referred to as the Appalachian Plateau Region, this mountainous province is found in extreme northwestern Georgia. Its most prominent features are Lookout and Sand Mountains. A variety of vegetation types occur in this area, depending on elevation, but Appalachian Oak Forests cover most of the Province.

An imposing escarpment, known as the Allegheny Front, divides the Ridge and Valley Province from the Appalachian Plateau Province. It includes Backbone Mountain, Maryland's highest point at 3,360 feet above sea level.
