The number of cotyledons present in an embryo is an important character in the classification of flowering plants (angiosperms). Monocotyledons (such as grasses, palms, and lilies) have a single cotyledon, whereas dicotyledons (the majority of plant species) have two.

For instance, the Nymphaeales, or water lilies, have reticulate venation in their leaves, and what may be a single cotyledon in the embryo. It is not clear whether it is a single lobed cotyledon, or two which have been fused.

The number of cotyledons is an important feature in classifying plants. Among the flowering plants, the class known as Monocotyledonae have a single cotyledon and Dicotyledonae have two. Conifers have either two cotyledons, as in Taxus (yews), or five to ten, as in Pinus (pines).
