A method of starting a fire with flint and steel which few people take advantage of, but which works very well, is using your flintlock to catch a spark. Simply place a folded piece of char cloth in the pan, close the frizzen and fire the lock.

There are two basic ways of starting a fire with flint and steel. In the first, which I call the Boy Scout method, you hold the steel in your left hand (assuming you are right handed), and strike the steel with the flint held in the right hand to direct sparks into your tinder box or wad of tinder.

For fire starting, I pack two different types of equipment in my survival kits to provide redundancy: wind and waterproof matches and a "Spark-Lite" flint style fire starter kit which also includes Spark-Lite "Fire Tab" tinders.

Sometimes it seems that the subject of starting a fire with flint and steel has been hashed and rehashed in every living history publication or buckskinning book I've ever picked up. The vast majority of these articles have been well written by folks who know what they are talking about.

When you strike a glancing blow, with the face of the fire steel, across the sharp edge of the flint, you get sparks. What you are doing is cutting or scraping little bits of the steel off with the sharp edge of the flint.

Let's discuss each component of the fire starting process. Flint rock can be found throughout the United States. I usually go out and walk the cattle trails on our farm and kick up an arrowhead or two which are commonly made from flint.
