Reed College is in a southeast Portland neighborhood, five miles from the downtown area and 12 miles from Portland International Airport. The campus is easily accessible from downtown locations and major highways.

Classics majors are strongly urged to consider applying to the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS), administered by Duke Univesity and of which Reed College is a member. ICCS offers the opportunity for intensive study of the archaeology, history, and art of Rome, and of Greek and Latin literature.

I left the University of Pennsylvania, where, as dean of its law school, I had lived under the U.S. News & World Report ranking system for ten years, and assumed the presidency of Reed College, one of a handful of American institutions of higher education that refuse to cooperate with that system.
