Sierra Nevada , mountain range, c.400 mi/644 km long and from c.40 mi/64 km to 80 mi/129 km wide, mostly in E Calif., E side of range extends into W Nev. It rises to 14,494 ft/4,418 m in Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the United States outside Alaska.
