Ethnomusicology is the study of music in culture. Sometimes called "World Music", ethnomusicology places emphasis on the role and nature of music in non-Western societies. However, techniques learned in ethnomusicology can also be used to study music in Western society as well.

Students at the master's level combine elective courses with core courses in ethnomusicology. At the doctoral level, each student devises a unique program of study in consultation with a Directing Committee, whose members help to oversee the student's progress toward completion of degree requirements.
