A small number of English names are Elvish words themselves; translations for those Elvish words are given in the form of "tr. Elv.". For girls' names, I have added the feminine suffixes "iel" and "wen" to most of them, making a translation of the name Adele (meaning Noble) "Arwen" (Noble Maiden).

A few years ago Helge Fauskanger, the web master of Ardalambion, wrote an article called Now We Have All Got Elvish Names for a nice journal Tyalie Tyelleliéva. In this article he translated several common first names in Quenya (a High Elven language, a speech of the Noldor and Vanyar).

You want to write your name in Elvish, but every place you go seems to make it harder than it ought to be. Elvish writing looks beautiful and mysterious, but does it really have to be impossible to understand? ... Please be aware that there are many ways to write English words in Elvish.
