Famous ciphers have had an interesting effect on history. The Zimmerman Telegraph was a cipher that had a great effect on World War I. The Shugborough inscription, a carved sequence of letters that has never been satisfactorily explained. It has been called one of the world's top uncracked ciphertexts. Finally, in recent history, the Zodiac killer in California sent ciphers to the San Francisco Chronicle, Vallejo Times-Herald and San Francisco Examiner. These ciphers help captivate the nation and brought a lot of attention to the murders.
