Hoop Skirts
Hoop skirts were popular in the mid 1800s. Hoop skirts are a type of women's undergarment, kind of like crinoline. Hoop skirts were worn during formal occasions by upper-class women. Hoop skirts were made from sturdy material with casings sewn along the length of the skirt. The casings of the hoop skirt held stiffening material to project the hoop skirt out from the wearer's body. At one point, the hoop skirt was very fashionable, but very impractical. Both the crinoline and hoop skirts were replaced by the bustle for more practical wear.

Hoop skirts are very time consuming to construct from scratch. I've made a few, and those purchased hoops at any price look pretty good to me now. McCalls and Past Patterns have very good hoop skirt patterns as well as patterns for skirts made with piping.
