River Island
River Island is Britian's best known high fashion brands. The company was set up in 1948 by Bernard Lewis. After many name changes the name River Island has stuck since 1989. The company is a family affair and at 84 years of age CEO Bernard Lewis is still involved with the day-to-day operations. All the designers are in-house and rarely seen with a high fashion brand.

It may be the largest river island in the world but it is steadily shrinking – eroded by the Brahmaputra river in which it is situated. Efforts to preserve the island and halt the erosion, caused by the glacial flood waters of the Himalayas, have been unco-ordinated and – say critics – ineffective.
