Foreign investors are accorded national treatment, and foreign ownership of companies is virtually unrestricted in Bolivia. Many of these Nationalizations have taken place in both the hydrocarbon and mining sectors, and the role of the state in the economy continues to be a primary goal of the Morales administration.

The explotation of mineral resources, which accounts for nearly all the country's exports, and agriculture, which caters mainly to the local market, form the basis of Bolivia's economy. It is strongly influenced by fluctuations of demand and price of gas and tin on the world market.
