The California Sea Cucumber grows up to 50cm long. They are the largest cucumbers in B.C. waters. They range in colours from red in juveniles to brown or mottled brown, with all white individuals occurring rarely.

The California sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus, is found from the Gulf of Alaska to Baja California, Mexico in the low intertidal zone down to 249 meters. This is the largest sea cucumber on the West Coast, up to 20 in in length when it is relaxed.

Natural History: This is the largest of our local sea cucumbers. It can rear up and swim with slow undulations when threatened. Like many other sea cucumbers, it can eviscerate part of its internal organs and escape while its predator is distracted by this meal.

Sea cucumbers are soft-bodied wormlike echinoderms, having a body cylinder with a mouth at one end encircled by tentacles, and the anus at the other. They have the basic echinoderm radial symmetry, but no arms, and the echinoderm skeleton is reduced to small, scattered calcareous bonelike plates, and is usually flexible.

Discussion In Puget Sound, natural populations of the California Sea Cucumber normally eject their internal organs in late fall and then regenerate a new set for spring. A related species, the Parvima Sea Cucumber (P. parvimensis) occurs from Monterey Bay to Baja California.
