In preparation for molting the crayfish withdraws most of the calcium from its shell, and stores it in two white "tablets"in the sides of its head. Calcium is a major hardener in the crayfish shell, as it is in strong human bones and teeth.

Last month I got my crayfish he molted the day after, I notice strange behavior as he/she was stacking all the gravel on top of his/her cave. Anyways today, Which is like a month later I caught it molting again! I notice that it was doing the same thing before it did was stacking its cave with gravel....

They grow by molting, that is they shed their carapace (shell) when they outgrow it, and form a new hard shell. When they first molt they are soft, and very vulnerable to attack by other crayfish or fish. It can take a couple days for the new shell to fully harden.
