As a part of French West Africa from 1898 to its independence in 1960, it was known as the French Sudan. Its current name, taken at the time of independence, is derived from the Mali empire of the upper and middle Niger, which was ruled by the Malinke (Mandingo) from the 13th to the 16th century.
