Depending on 'how fast' you need it - let hot water from the faucet run through a bowl in your sink then take the empty, but quite warm, bowl and place it upside down on a stick of butter (that has been cut into quarters) on the counter.

I usually do it the fast way - partially melt it in the microwave but I read recently that the only way to do it right is to let it stand at room temp. ... When I remember, I let the butter soften at room temperature (providing room temp isn't the middle of a heat wave and it's 80* or warmer in the house!). :rolleyes:
