Sugarbeet is a biennial plant which was developed in Europe in the 18th century from white fodder beets. Sugar reserves are stored in the sugarbeet root during the first growing season for an energy source during overwintering.

The first sugar beets were grown in the Sanford-Ferndale area in 1940. Neil Simonsen, Walter Moors, Harry Verrall, Jim Grant, Sam and Ralph Rhynard grew the first beets in the area. During WWII, Japanese people were brought from the west coast to thin the beets.
