There are many types of beans. Jelly beans. No, those don't count as beans, sorry. They may have no fat, but they also have no nutrition to speak of. Fortunately, the other kind of beans tell a different story. There are: lentils, soy beans, pinto beans, great northern beans, garbanzo beans, lima beans, red kidney beans, black beans, navy beans and black eyed peas to name a few. Black eyed peas should be called beans because in reality, that's what they are. Beans are highly nutritious, packed with protein, vitamins and lots of fiber. Beans are great for preventing illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer. Pinto beans are a common Southern U.S. favorite, as are black eyed peas. Pintos are also very big in Mexican fare. They are used in any type of food you can imagine from tacos to burritos as refried beans (mashed up pintos). What about the other kind of beans? We are talking about green beans, shelly beans, wax beans, snap beans and the list goes on. Include some beans in every meal and experiment with different varieties and recipes.
