Rockfish are divided into two types, "pelagic" - shallow, open water, and "non-pelagic" - deep water, bottom dwelling (demersal). Pelagic rockfish include Black, Dusky, and Yellowtails. Non-pelagic include Yelloweye, Quillback, Copper, China, Tiger, Silvergray, Rougheye and Shortrakers.

There are over 50 different types of rockfish inhabiting the west coast. The fishing method for all is the same. Three to five shrimp flies are tied to a leader, usually 30# test, at about 8" intervals via short (4") drop lines,.

There are many local types of rockfish. Since many of us have difficulty identifying them underwater as anything other than "rockfish", I've chosen to group them together here. You'll find one photo of each species and a link to a separate page for that species.
