What do crawfish eat? A crawfish's favorite food is soft, decomposing plant matter; however, they will eat just about anything – algae, snails, insects, plants, dead fish, etc. Crawfish are cannibals and will even consume other crawfish that are molting.

They come out at night and I assume they must eat insects. I teased one with a blade of grass and he thought it was a tasty morsel. An interesting thing that I have found...one of the holes located in my raised bed flower garden is directly below a rose moss plant.

Tip from Chef Brian Smith: When eating crawfish, there's no need to remove the peel from the tail. While you are laboring over the crust of the crustacean, your Cajun friends will eat five times as many crawfish as you do.
