I've eaten French brie and can attest to this personally. However, in the US, brie has to be made with pasturized milk, which tends to keep the rind less flavorful. According to the O-chef site, the rind actually starts out as fine white hairs, and grows into what the French call "poil de chat," or cat fur.

Bries (and all commercially produced cheeses in this country) are made from pasteurized milk, which may account for the rather uninspired taste of the rind. It would be a huge mess and enormous waste of time to remove the rind from a wheel of brie before baking it.

Brie can be made from whole or skimmed milks, and milks that are raw or pasteurized. After the curd is obtained, the cheese is cast into molds, traditionally with a perforated ladle or ... Or, toss chunks of Brie (rind removed) with cooked pasta like rotini or cavatappi for a very sophisticated macaroni and cheese.
