Bumps on Back of Tongue
Lie bumps" are caused by trauma (rubbing, scraping or biting) that removes the surface of the one of the fungiform papillae. The fungiform papillae are the normal little bumps on the tongue that people call "taste buds." Most people, when their tongue is irritated, can't seem to keep from rubbing it against the teeth to make it feel better (sort of like scratching an itch); however, this usually makes things worse. You might want to try using a protective over-the-counter medication such as OraBase or Zilactin. These materials act like a bandage and help to protect the ulcerated surface of the fungiform papilla.

A number of days before that I discovered bumps on the back of my tongue. Also my tongue is whitish from the back to about the middle. I had a bad cold 4 weeks ago. The doctor told me it was a virus and that the bumps were my glands swollen.

If you stick out your tongue, you can see them on your tongue too. These large bumps on the top surface of the back of the tongue are a fourth type of papilla called circumvallate papillae.

Those bumps at the back of your tongue are just taste buds, and it is perfectly normal. As for the whitish coating, to some extend that is normal too. If it is very thick it could be a build up of yeast. Use a spoon to gently scrape it off.
