Bursitis of the Heel

Bursitis of the heel is an inflammation of the sac or bursa. It is caused by the swelling of the sac or pad that lies between the bone and the muscle of the tendon. This sac contains fluid known as "synovial fluid." It reduces friction between the bone and tendon or tendon and ligament. This condition is commonly referred to as "Achilles heel", as related in Greek mythology. It can present itself as a painful, swollen, and sometimes reddened area. Rest is often prescribed along with pain medications. In severe cases a physician should be contacted for futher evaluation. For more information, visit http://www.web.md.com
