Catatonic State

When a person is in a catatonic state, their activity is generally reduced to nothing. They avoid eye contact, do not bathe or groom and do not speak or communicate with anyone. Their muscles may be rigid and sometimes they may run a fever or sweat profusely. Some people assume strange physical postures with their bodies. People in catatonia typically walk in strange ways, if at all. They may walk on tiptoes or pace back and forth. Some patients imitate other sounds or speech of others. Causes of catatonia can range from problems with brain functioning, stress or shock, or taking a medication that induced the state. Fortunately, catatonia usually responds well to medication therapy or in very rare cases, surgery. http://journals.lww.com/cogbehavneurol/Abstract/2009/03000/Reversal_of_Preoperative_Catatonic_State_by.8.aspx
