Causes of Obesity

The primary causes of obesity are many-fold. However, the bottom line is that, in general, significant numbers of Americans are consuming more calories than they are burning. In terms of consumption, portions in restaurants and prepared grocery foods have more than doubled in recent decades. Food additives such high fructose corn syrup are also thought to play a role by increasing a craving for sweets and being more difficult to digest. Surprisingly, a lack of sleep can also contribute by decreasing a person's calorie burning efficiency. Add a more sedentary lifestyle to the mix and its no wonder that obesity is on the rise.
