History of Marijuana

**Adult Content** Marijuana has a long and rocky history in the world. References to it appear as early as 2700 b.c in China. It was introduced in Europe and the Americas in the 15 and 1600s, and was commonly used as remedy for many ailments. It was banned for recreational use in 46 states in 1937, then later was allowed in small amounts for medicinal purposes in a few states. In 2002 a major campaign for its decriminalization took place, however, federal law overruled in most cases. Eight states have enacted various laws to effectively allow medicinal marijuana use, but the prescribers, growers, and shop owners still face the risk of federal prosecution.
