Lingual Tonsil--These are covered in depth above, but they are often mistaken for cancerous growths simply because people rarely look at this area of the tongue. When they do, they see this normal bit of anatomy and assume that it is some sort of pathological growth.

These are called the lingual tonsils. The lingual tonsils extend to the top (dorsal) surface of the tongue further back down your throat (see diagram below). Above the soft palate, about even with the palatine and lingual tonsils lie two similar masses of tissue called the Adenoids.
