List of Ego Defense Mechanisms

According to Freudian Psychoanalytic theory, defense mechanisms are psychological strategies used to cope with reality and to maintain self-image. The Freudian model is based on interactions between the Id, the Ego, and the Super Ego. It is the Ego's job to defend the Id and satisfy the impulses, which is done so through these defense mechanisms. The list of ego defense mechanisms includes: denial, displacement, intellectualization, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, repression, sublimation, and suppression.
