Prostaglandin Gel

Prostaglandin gel is a medication commonly used during the last phase of pregnancy to induce labor and delivery. It is an artificial hormone similar to what your body produces to start the labor process. It works by softening and thinning the cervix which prepares you to deliver the baby. Results usually come 6-12 hours after use of the gel. Physicians usually use the gel if you are past your due date, you have a very large baby near or past your due date, you have a small baby near your due date or if you have high blood pressure which can prove to be a danger to you and the fetus. The gel works by inserting it into the vagina and your Dr. will instruct you to lie in bed for about 60 minutes while the gel works. They may hook up a fetal monitor to keep tabs on the baby and your contractions. If the gel is unsuccessful after the first attempt, you may be sent home if there are no problems and they will re-attempt it again later.
