Remove Bugs from Ears

An ear canal is warm, moist and protected, which provides an ideal environment for a bug. Think of it as being like humans heading for a cave with a nice, warm fire built inside for protection from a pounding rain storm. The problem is because it can be slick with earwax, even if they want to get out on their own, sometimes they can't. So what can you do if you suspect a bug is in your ear or your child's? Ask the person what symptoms they are experiencing? They might hear a crackling sound or other funny noises in their ear and say something is tickling inside. If it is an insect, stay calm. If it is a child, they will pick up on your fear, so keep calm. Have the person lean their head over the bathtub with the bug-filled ear facing upward. Slowly pour in olive, baby, mineral, or vegetable oil until it is filled. Tug on the earlobe gently to remove air bubbles and let it soak in. Wait for a few minutes which will drown the insect (allowing for easy removal.) Now, pour a cup of clean, warm water into the ear and flush it well. You should see the insect coming out with the water and oil, or at least segments of it. Keep flushing until you are certain you have gotten all parts out. If the problem persists or you are unable to get all of it out of the ear, it is best to see a Dr. to be safe. Never attempt to retrieve the bug using cotton swabs or tweezers, since you can either shove the bug further into the canal or rupture the ear drum.
