Stages of Fracture Healing

There are 5 stages of a fracture healing. First, is the actual fracture occurence where bleeding, tenderness and a lot of swelling may be present. Second, is the formation of granulation tissue around fractured ends of the bone. These first two stages are called the reactive phase, since your body is reacting to the injury, or sometimes it is called the inflammation phase. The third stage is that the granulation tissue is removed and replaced by callus. Stage four is replacement of the callus by lamellar bone tissue. Stages three and four are reparative phases. Stage five is the final remodeling of bone to regain the contour it should have. Stage five is called the remodeling phase. http://www.davidlnelson.md/Fractures_in_general.htm

What others are suggesting
Fractures, or broken bones, are common injuries that orthopaedists treat. The healing process is generally the same for all fractures; through a series of stages, new bone forms and fills in the fractured area. If the fracture is severe, problems that slow the healing process can occur.

Stages of Fracure Healing ... The fracture healing starts with the bleeding, tenderness, and swelling your are experiencing now (if you are here because I just saw you for a fracture). In fact, these are not only present now, but are absolutely necessary.

Secondary healing of bones involves the classical stages of fracture healing, i.e. impaction, inflammation, primary soft callus formation, callus mineralisation and callus remodelling (Crenshaw 1992, Greenbaum & Kanat 1993).

This increase was enhanced at the later stages with fracture healing. The presence of zinc acexamate (10(-4) M) in culture medium caused a significant increase in bone protein and osteocalcin production at 7 or 21 days after bone fracture.

(1977, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, "The four biomechanical stages of fracture repair", 59A:188-192), characterized the mechanical properties of healing fracture tissue into four stages. These four stages are as follows:

For this reason, bone healing has been referred to as bone regeneration, and is basically considered and exaggeration of the normal remodeling process that occurs throughout life. Fracture healing occurs in six stages:
