Symptoms of a Torn Foot Ligament

The symptoms of a torn foot ligament will vary according to which ligament and the manner in which it was injured. There are 6 major ligaments that function when you walk. It has been said that a torn ligament can feel more painful than a broken bone. Injury usually occurs when twisting it a certain way, for example while stepping into a hole in the yard and you turn your ankle or some other misstep. It will be extremely painful when you move it a certain way or attempt to use it or walk on it and it will likely begin to swell. Sometimes it may appear bruised and feel tender to the touch or feel hot. To rehabilitate your foot, Dr.'s usually recommend R-I-C-E therapy (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). This is effective because icing keeps the swelling and inflammation down, compression (or wrapping your foot with an elastic bandage) controls movement and keeps swelling at bay. Elevation is effective because if your foot is higher than your heart it will not pool so much blood into it which will help your foot get better faster. http://jointhealing.com/pages/foot/acute_ankle_sprain_tx.html
