Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics. Tics are involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. It is believed that an abnormal metabolism of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin are involved with the disorder. TS is genetically transmitted with the parents having a 50% chance of passing the gene on to their children. Girls with the gene have a 70% chance of displaying symptoms and boys with the gene have a 99% chance of displaying symptoms. People with this disorder feel s an irresistible urge to perform their tics. Some people with TS are able to hold their tics off for a long time, but this only leads to a stronger outburst later.
