Treatment for Bitten Tongue

The tongue actually heals very quickly on it own so most bitten tongues will be ok with some TLC. You can wash the area clean just by using water and if need to reduce swelling some ice. Pressure can be applied to the tongue just by simply pressing the tongue against the rook of the mouth. If it is not healing and cut gapes open, has a bad smell, continues to bleed or has dirt in it you might wish to visit an emergency room quickly. The tongue can also be sewn up if the cut is more then an inch long, the myth of never requiring stitches is just that. While it is healing you may want to reframe from spicy or irritating foods. You may have soreness for 4-5 days, and if you get a fever, bad breath or it just won't heal you may want to contact a dentist or doctor for further treatment.
