Hollow Point Bullets

Hollow point bullets have a pit or hollowed out shape in its tip. These bullets generally cause the bullet to expand upon entering a target which decreases penetration and causes more tissue damage as it travels through a target. They are sometimes used to control penetrationto minimize collateral damage (such as on an airplane). Hollow-point bullets can improve accuracy by shifting the center of gravity of the bullet rearwards. Some hollow-cavity bullets are used to describe a hollow point that is unusually large, and may dominate the volume of the bullet, which causes extreme expansion or fragmentation on impact.

A colleague asks: "[I'm] wondering if hollow point bullets are legal and if so, what is the rationale given by gun fanciers for that rule? I know under the international law of war they are not legal in combat, but I take it the same isn’t clear in domestic law."

If a situation escalates to the point that an officer must fire his gun, he is trained only to shoot to kill. Police are also trained not to shoot if it would endanger a bystander. It is therefore immaterial to argue about the increased injury that hollow-point bullets could cause to suspects and bystanders.

Hollow point bullets are a type of ammunition designed to expand upon hitting a target. The impact forces the bullet to mushroom open, expanding to 160 percent its original size. This causes a large wound cavity and increases the likelihood of death.
