I guess I am asking, what do you use to clean the bottom of the iron, where fabric burned on to it? ... If it's not a teflon-coated iron, use 0000 steel wool or one of those green scrubber 3M pads to get the rest of the goop.

If (as is most likely) it is starch residue, then elbow grease and a good cleaner such as Simple Green, Top Job etc. will remove it. After you have cleaned the sole of the iron, you should iron several pieces of waxed paper to coat the bottom and help it slide over clothing rather than dragging.
