Standing Water in Bottom of Dishwasher
Some dishwasher models leave standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher by design. Check the drain filter for food or other obstructions. Make sure the drain hose is properly installed to prevent backwash. Clean the inside with a light bleach solution to help prevent odors. Use a wet-dry vacuum every few months to clean out the drain lines. Check the dishwasher manual's troubleshooting section for more tips.

Putting 2 tablespoons of oil into the sudsy water at the bottom of the dishwasher will help break up the suds. Sprinkle ordinary table salt liberally across the suds to disperse them. Add a large quantity of ice cubes from your freezer to the tub.

My daughter's dishwasher failed to empty last week - when I removed the filter it was completely bunged up with grease and gunge. After thorough cleaning with near boiling water the machine then emptied perfectly.
