Toilet Won T Flush Completely

If you have the problem that your toilet won't flush completely, it can come from many different sources and to find out which one, you'll have to do a little creative troubleshooting. First, take a 5 gallon bucket full of water and quickly pour it down the toilet. If it flushes good when you do that, likely it is not an obstructed trap or drain line. If it doesn't go down well with that, you need to check your trap and drain lines. Secondly, if it did well with the bucket flush, you may not have enough water flow to properly get all solids down the toilet. Check with a mirror under the rim or feel with your finger. See if the holes that send out water are clogged with mineral buildup. If they are, you will have to clean them out with a coat hanger or a stiff wire brush to get it flowing freely. You also will want to stick your finger in the hole that starts the siphoning action to see if it has mineral buildup. If so, clean it out with a metal object like an old butter knife if need be. In addition, check for problems with the float, valve and chain length. Sometimes there can be a minor problem that causes the water flow to be inadequate to completely flush the toilet. For a few dollars you can get a new part and the problem is solved. If all else fails you can call a plumber or rent an auger or pipe snake to make sure the line is completely clear.
