Oh sorry- it's a comma before the word "and". At school (in England) they teach us never ever to put a comma before "and". I hated that because sometimes it looks like you just have to, so I went ahead and broke the rule. ... I would not include a comma before as well or too; I would before though, though.

If there is no comma, the last two items seem to be one. For example: I ate an apple, a slice of pizza and chips. This makes it seem as though the pizza and chips were eaten together or otherwise separated from the apple (and makes it seem the comma should be followed by another "and").

Although some have given me explanations, I still don't understand why there is a comma before 'though'? Then when we should and should not put a comma before the words 'although', 'though', 'because' when they are placed to join two sentences together.

i mean, if you look at the sentence, the lawyers put a comma before `and' even though it was not followed by an independent clause. the addition of a comma after `five year terms' makes it seem like that whole segment is just added but not necessary (i.e., that it can be taken out without a significant change in meaning).
