Catharsis

Catharsis, a noun, is a Greek word pertaining to purification, cleansing, and/clarification. It can also be considered the purging of the emotions through certain kinds of art, as tragedy or music. In psychiatry, psychotherapy encourages or permits the discharge of pent-up, socially unacceptable affects. Also in psychiatry, catharsis is considered the discharge of pent-up emotions to alleviate symptoms or permanently relieve a condition.
