Direct and Indirect Speech

When you quote the actual words of the speaker you are using the Direct Speech method. When you tell what the speaker said without using the exact quotes you are using the Indirect Speech Method. Example: Direct: Joe said, "I am going to the store now." Indirect: Joe said that he was was going to the store.
