Prefixes Suffixes Roots

Prefixes, suffixes, roots, oh my! Without these three puzzle pieces, the English language would not have a chance at fitting together. A prefix is a word segment that is placed in front of a "root" word. A suffix is a word segment that is placed after the "root" word. For example, let's take the root word "gain." If we add the prefix "re," it becomes regained - to gain again. If we take the root word "gain" and add the suffix "ed," it changes the root word to past tense.
