Prefixes Suffixes

Many prefixes and suffixes find their roots affixed to the ancient language of Latin. Ironically, prefixes and suffixes are called "affixes" because of their attachment to root words. In English, many words consiste of three parts: the root, the prefix and the suffix. The prefix/suffix can change the meaning of the root word at times. A prefix goes in front of the root word, and the suffix is after the root. Common prefixes are "re, pre, de, dis." Common suffixes are "ing, ed, ion." For example, take the word "tread," which can insinuate physical movement. If we add the "re" prefix, it becomes retread, which is a common type of tire. Add "ed," and the scenario moves into the past. You can have fun with prefixes and suffixes, and see more about them at http://www.southampton.liunet.edu/academic/pau/course/webesl.htm
